Calculate net amount, VAT and gross total in Italy
-
What is the VAT calculator?
The VAT calculator from Graber & Partner is a free online tool that allows users to calculate VAT amounts quickly and easily.
The calculator can be used both to determine the net amount from a gross amount and to calculate the gross amount from a net amount. The VAT rate can be entered individually according to the user's requirements.
Because any percentage can be entered, the calculator can be used for different countries and applications, such as Italy, Germany or Austria.
What do net amount, VAT and gross amount mean?
When calculating VAT, a distinction is made between net and gross amounts:
- Net amount: the value of a product or service before VAT is added.
- VAT: the tax amount applied to the net amount.
- Gross amount: the total amount including VAT.
VAT is calculated by applying the relevant tax rate to the net amount. The gross amount is therefore the sum of the net amount and the VAT.
How does the calculation from net to gross work?
The net-to-gross calculation determines the final amount including VAT based on an amount before tax.
The net amount represents the calculation base. The applicable VAT rate is then added to this amount.
The formula is:
Gross amount = Net amount + VAT
Example with a net amount of 1,000 € and a VAT rate of 22 %:
- Net amount: 1,000 €
- VAT (22 %): 220 €
- Gross amount: 1,220 €
This calculation is frequently used when preparing quotations, calculating sales prices or determining final customer prices including VAT.
How does the calculation from gross to net work?
The gross-to-net calculation determines the net amount and the VAT included in an amount that already contains VAT.
The VAT included in a gross amount cannot simply be calculated by applying the VAT rate to the total amount, because the VAT rate applies to the net amount and not to the gross amount.
The formula is:
Net amount = Gross amount ÷ (1 + VAT rate)
Example with a gross amount of 1,220 € and a VAT rate of 22 %:
- Gross amount: 1,220 €
- Net amount: 1,220 € ÷ 1.22 = 1,000 €
- VAT included: 220 €
The VAT calculator performs this calculation automatically and determines the VAT portion included in the final price.
Why is the VAT included in a gross amount not simply the VAT percentage applied to the total?
A common mistake is to calculate VAT by applying the VAT rate directly to the gross amount.
Example:
For a gross amount of 1,220 € with a VAT rate of 22 %, the incorrect calculation would be:
1,220 € × 22 % = 268.40 €
The correct VAT amount is instead 220 €, because the 22 % rate must be applied to the net amount of 1,000 €.
The VAT calculator automatically applies the correct calculation method.
Which VAT rates can be used?
The VAT calculator allows users to enter any percentage. Therefore, it can be used for different countries and applications.
Examples:
- Italy: standard VAT rate of 22 %, with reduced rates of 10 %, 5 % and 4 % for certain goods and services.
- Germany: standard VAT rate of 19 % and reduced VAT rate of 7 %.
- Austria: standard VAT rate of 20 %, with reduced rates such as 10 % or 13 % for certain transactions.
The correct VAT rate always depends on the legislation of the respective country and the specific transaction.
Can the VAT calculator be used for Italian VAT?
Yes. The calculator can also be used for simple calculations relating to Italian VAT.
In Italy, VAT is referred to as IVA (Imposta sul Valore Aggiunto). The standard VAT rate is 22 %, while reduced rates apply to certain categories of goods and services.

How does the VAT system generally work?
VAT is an indirect tax applied to the supply of goods and the provision of services.
Businesses charge VAT to their customers and generally pay it to the tax authorities. At the same time, businesses can generally deduct VAT paid on purchases and services received.
The difference between output VAT and input VAT determines the amount actually payable to the tax authorities or a possible VAT credit.
What is the difference between output VAT and input VAT?
- Output VAT: VAT charged by a business on its sales.
- Input VAT: VAT paid by a business on purchases and received services.
Example:
- VAT on sales: 2,200 €
- VAT on purchases: 1,000 €
- VAT payable: 1,200 €
For which purposes can the VAT calculator be used?
The calculator can be used, for example, for:
- calculating sales prices;
- preparing and checking quotations;
- checking invoice amounts;
- converting between net and gross amounts;
- simple calculations in everyday business activities.
Does the VAT calculator determine which VAT rate applies?
No. The calculator only performs mathematical calculations.
It does not determine which VAT rate must legally be applied to a specific transaction.
The correct VAT treatment depends, among other things, on:
- the type of goods or services;
- the place of supply;
- the customer (business or private individual);
- special VAT regimes, exemptions or reverse charge rules.
Does the VAT calculator replace tax advice?
No. The VAT calculator is a practical tool for simple calculations and does not replace individual tax advice.
For international transactions, intra-community supplies, services provided to foreign customers or specific VAT situations, an individual assessment of the specific case is required.
Why does Graber & Partner provide a free VAT calculator?
VAT is one of the most important taxes for businesses and, at the same time, a complex area due to numerous rules and exceptions.
